What is a Rubber Duck

Rubber duck or rubber ducky is a toy shaped like a duck which is designed to float in the bathtub and can be used either as children's toy or as decoration. The original rubber ducks were designed to float in the water, however, not all rubber ducks are floating, some ducks are similar to other squeezable toys. All rubber ducks usually include a squeaker, while some squeakers make a sound resembling the quack of a real duck.

The origin and the idea of a floating duck toy is unknown, however, for the emergence of rubber ducks was essential the emergence of rubber in the early 19th century. Rubber ducks as we know today were made popular throughout the world by Jim Henson's Sesame Street character Ernie in the 1970's, while rubber ducks today besides their function as a children's (as well as adult's) toy and a decoration object also have an iconic status.

The yellow rubber duck in a sitting pose with a squeaker is probably the best known rubber duck worldwide but there are many different designs, types, sizes, shapes and colors of rubber ducks available on the world market today. They are made of plastic, rubber or rubber-like material and are still primarily children's toys used to draw their attention while bathing to make bathing more enjoyable, however, rubber ducks have also their fans among many adults who likes to use them in their bathtubs, while rubber ducks are also an object of collection worldwide.
